Infographics: A History of Personality Psychology

Section I: General Chronology and Driving Forces of Personality

The history of personality psychology dates as far back as Ancient Greece. Indeed, philosophers since the 4th Century BCE have been trying to define exactly what it is that makes us us. In 370 BCE, Hippocrates proposed two pillars of temperament: hot/cold and moist/dry, resulting in four humors or combinations of these qualities. The hot and dry combination was referred to as yellow bile, cold and dry as black bile, hot and wet was blood and cold and wet was phlegm. Though much of the work that arose from this theory of the Four Humors was medicinal in nature, it was also hypothesized a patient's personality could be influenced by humoral imbalances.

So, what’s the current state of this field? There has been a shift away from usingtraits to determine specific personality types. Rather, it is widely viewed by psychologists that traits should be measured a continuum. Beyond that debate, scientists are constantly trying to elucidate biological factors that influence personality, difference between and within groups and how personality psychology can be applied to various fields from business to education. Even more recently, there has been a move to re-conceptualize traits as motivations (Fleeson 2001). Fleeson is a proponent of understanding how traits vary across contexts and time. He argues that even though our personality may vary quite a bit within a given day or week -- that variability is consistent across time (e.g., if you are moody in one particular context this week, you will likely be moody in a similar context next week) and thus we can use personality traits as a predictive measure of behavior. It is easy to hear about an individual’s personality traits and think “Hm, yes, that does describe how they behave.” But the real power of personality traits lies within viewing them as factors that drive goal-directed behavior in everyday situations. This way of thinking can help explain why people do what they do and even predict behavioral outcomes, which has important implications in the world of marketing and business strategy.

Infographics TOS for Industrial Psychology

TOS for Industrial Psychology

If one will notice, the focus of the exam is on the employee more than the organization (the focus of Organizational Psychology). Primarily it deals with the job performed by the human resource (HR) manager - from hiring to training, evaluation to motivation and improving the well being of employees in the workplace. Except for team dynamics that focuses on a group and individuals in a team,  the rest of the exam items are about the employee.

It will be an advantage to those more senior board takers who have experienced doing HR work for companies or organization having been exposed to the whole process or cycle of employee selection to firing employees

So for the younger board exam takers, catch up by reading some more on these topics and complement your readings and review by talking and exchanging with experienced HR officers and managers.

Infographics TOS for Abnormal Psychology

The infographics helps  us remind what to focus on our review. It should be noted that treatment/intervention is not part of the TOS for Abnormal Psychology. Primarily it focuses on diagnosis, symptoms, etiology (causes), factors, theories, ethical principles and standards that relates to abnormal behaviors or psychopathology.

Take note also of the operative outcome-based assessment keywords such as - apply, use, explain, identify, recognize and distinguish.

Aside from the textbook, am using wikipedia also as source for readings, as well as other journals and books. Do not forget to refer also to PAP Code of Ethics for Philippine Psychologists we posted before.

Infographics - An Evolution of Mental Illness Treatment

An evolution of mental illness treatment

The infographics is silent about the use of DSM in diagnosing mental illness - so the prescription of psychoactive drugs. So much developments that took place in the 20th century that were not reflected in the infographics. Perhaps a separate one? Still a very nice presentation on the history of the treatment of mental illness.

Particular Emphasis on Psychological Assessment on your Review

Among the four subjects for the Psychometrician Licensure Exam, it is highly probable that Psychological Assessment will have the most items compared to the other three subjects: Abnormal Psychology, Theories of Personality and Industrial Psychology.

Well after all, the licensure exam is for Psychometrician and those who will be licensed should be adept in Psychometrics, Psychological Testing  and Psychological Assessment.

So if the rest of the subjects would be at 100 items each, with a percentage of 20%, then Psychological Assessment would be in the range of 130-160 items at 40%.

So what are the most likely topics from this subject? Kindly refer to this earlier post here - http://psychometricpinas.blogspot.com/p/chedcourse-specification.html

Also, be sure to cover the following areas shown in the infographics.

Please tag and share this info to your friends and other reviewers.
