Nalalapit na naman ang taunang Pambansang Kumperensya sa Sikolohiyang Pilipino. Ngayong taon, ang tema ng kumperensya ay"Sikolohiya ng Malasakit at Pananagutan" na gaganapin sa Lungsod Naga, Camarines Sur sa darating na 21-23 Nobyembre 2013. Ito ay isasagawa sa Naga Regent Hotel (21 Nobyembre) at sa University of Nueva Caceres (22-23 Nobyembre). Ito ay pamamahalaan ni Prop. John Hermes Untalan ng San Beda College bilang convenor at ni Prop. Miriam Aquino Malabanan ng Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas bilang co-covenor.

Katuwang ang University of Nueva Caceres, itatampok sa tatlong araw na kumperensiya ang mga pagtalakay sa paghubog ng malasakit at pananagutan ng mga Pilipino sa iba’t ibang kunteksto at ang pagtatanghal ng mga pananaliksik ng mga sikolohista at iba pang eksperto't may interes sa lipunan, kultura at sikolohiyang Pilipino. Sa ikatlong araw, magkakaroon din ng mga workshops/lakbay-aral na patuloy na maglilinang sa mga kaalaman at kasanayan ng mga dadalo sa kumperensiya.

Nilalayon ng kumperensya na: pagtuunan ng pansin ang paghubog ng pananagutan at malasakit sa iba’t ibang kunteksto: pag-uugnayan, pamilya, paaralan, propesyon, pananampalataya, at pamahalaan; magtampok ng mga pananaliksik sa sikolohiya, kultura, at lipunang Pilipino; at magbahagi ng kaalaman at kasanayan na nagtataguyod ng Sikolohiyang Pilipino.

Filipino Personality A Review of Research and Writings

Abstract

Here I review personality research in one non-Western culture, the Philippines. Reports from diverse cultures remind one that personality findings reflect the cultural setting from which they emerge, lead to "cross-indigenous" comparisons between alternative cultural perspectives, and suggest hypotheses about cultural generality versus uniqueness. I illustrate the impact of cultural context on topics studied; on the applicability of concepts, methods, and measures; and on the practice of psychology by using the Philippine case. I bought this book as an undergraduate student and have continued to use it as a graduate student. It's been fairly helpful at all levels. One flaw in this book is that some of the entries might be a little vague / opaque to those who don't already know something about the given topic, but by far most of this book is extremely useful and understandable. I do also have to say that as the field of psychology grows, this book is without a doubt going to be in need of an update (I think it was published in the late 80's). There are some new ideas / terms that you simply won't find in the book. Terms in neuropsychology are slim for example. But the entries available leaves you with a good grasp of the basics of the term in question.

I recommend it to undergrads who are just interested in figuring out what your psychology professor is talking about, to anyone wanting to brush up on the basic areas of psychology. It contains clear illustrations, common statistical formulas, a list of Greek symbols found in psychology, and a list of abbreviations commonly found in psychology.

This is a good book for picking up and browsing if you're just trying to edify yourself, and it's a good book to have handy if you are surrounded by psychologists, professors, and text books that will hit you with a term you aren't quite sure of or would like to know more about.

Psychological Testing Textbooks

The following are textbooks will be using for our review. We chose three titles, two Filipino authors and a foreign author or an international edition book. The local textbooks are thinner and in digested format unlike the international textbooks that are thicker so you get to read more explanations and see a lot more illustrations.

The textbook on Psychological Assessment: Theory and Practice by Dr. Evageline de Jesus and Dr. Maria Vida Caparas provides a general overview of psychological tests and the description of the major assessments tests that are popularly used by many Filipino psychometricians. Several tests devised by Filipino psychometrician and psychologists are also included such as: Ang Palagay ko sa Aking Sarili, Pasao Self-Concept Rating Scale, Panukat ng Pagkataong Pilipino, The Personality Adjustment Profile Test for Filipinos categorized under Personality Tests and Filipino Work Values Scale, Filipino Adolescent Anxiety Scale, Panukat ng Katalinuhang Filipino categorized under Special Tests.

Recently published is the textbook Psychological Testing in the Philippines: Practice, Directions and Perspectives authored by Dr. Natividad J. Munarriz and Dr. Vicentia M. Cerverra. The textbook is authoritative since it gives you a solid grounding on the different kinds of psychological tests. The tests are provided with theoretical frameworks so the basis of the tests are associated with different theories (cognitive, personality, etc) and models. Several Philippine devised psychological tests were also mentioned in the book. The appendix contains information about guidance and counselling in the Philippines.

This international edition textbook Psychological Testing Principles, Applications, and Issues by Robert Kaplan and Dennis Saccuzzo is definitely very thick with lots of examples and illustrations. The authors are respected in their professions as well as experience in the domain of psychological testing.
